The ladies of Square Rootz don’t mind going dutch on a date. We even like to switch things up and pay the whole tab once in a while. But lets keep it real, when funds are tight, and you still want to show your appreciation for your special someone, there aren’t many spots with 5-star appeal and $5 prices. Park Slope’s Song is your answer. This restaurant, a spin-off of Joya on Brooklyn’s Court Street, is named after the Thai word for “two.”
Upon entering Song, you’ll notice how the exposed bricks on the restaurants interior compliment the cauliflower blue walls. Dark wooden square tables – each complete with a small white candle - are strategically scattered throughout the dining area. The blue florescent lights that vertically line each wall give the restaurant an intimate feel.
The best part about Song comes after the friendly wait staff hands over the menus. This chic spot doesn’t have a dish over $7.95. It’s one of few places where you can order more than one course without breaking the bank. To get started, munch on the spring rolls- each crisped to perfection over a bed of fresh romaine lettuce - for only $2.95 an order. Then tease your palate with the Joya mango salad for $4.50.
For dinner, the Kanh Kyo Whan Pak -mixed vegetables in green coconut curry sauce - is heavenly and only runs $6.95 a plate. The servings are hefty and leave you and your date satisfied, and with enough food to take home for another meal.
Song also has a patio, where you can dine outside during the summer and spring, and on weekends a DJ spins starting at 7:30. Although this popular spot usually has a wait, with $5 and $6 glasses of Merlot and Chardonnay to enjoy at the bar, you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied and before you know it, your 15 minutes are up. Enjoy!
