Fact of the Week: Juneteenth

June 19, 1865

Juneteenth is celebrated by many Blacks on this date annually. It marks the day in 1865 when slaves in south Texas first heard news about the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after their freedom had been proclaimed.

  1. I guess people who celebrate this holiday really see the positive side. I’ve always thought it was pretty messed up not to be aware of your freedom for two years. How it became a national holiday for black folk all over, I’ll never know. Those were mad secret keeping skillz though.
