On April 14, 1775, in Philadelphia, the first abolitionist society in the United States was founded by Pennsylvania Quakers. The Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society fought for and protected abolitionist laws during the years of the American revolutionary and attacked slavery during a time when American politicians worked instead to avoid the sensitive and controversial issue.
