Wow. Just when you think people couldn’t get anymore ignorant, they always seem to surprise me. Last Thursday, the chairman of the Republican Party in New Mexico’s most populous county resigned Thursday after saying “Hispanics consider themselves above blacks” and won’t vote for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Come again?

According to this associated press article, Fernando C de Baca’s resignation as GOP chairman in Bernalillo County was announced by state GOP Chairman Allen Weh, one of several top New Mexico Republicans who had called for him to step down. “Mr. C de Baca has worked hard on behalf of the party, and his contributions should be appropriately recognized,” Weh said. “We are glad this matter has been resolved and wish him well.”

C de Baca, 70, was quoted in a BBC News blog last week as saying: “The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves. Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won’t vote for a black president.”

It is unfortunate that he mentions that Latinos were conquerors, as if that is something to be proud of. And ven if Latinos thought of themselves as “above” Blacks (which I don’t think they do) why would that keep them from voting for a Black president who arguably has more of their best interests at heart? I wish we, as people of color, would be able to unite and realize that we are ALL opressed in this country and unless we come together as one, there will never be change.

  1. it will be interesting to see how Spanish speaking voters use our voice at the polls. many Latinos were backing Hillary instead of Barack, so this should be interesting.

it’s funny how many Black and Brown people have similar concerns and won’t come together to solve problems. divide and conquer i guess…

sidenote: Latinos are European (Spanish), Indigeoneous, and African . peep this http://harvard.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=18603328088&topic=6238 to discuss the topic a bit more.
