Produced, written, directed and featuring Spike Lee and shot entirely on a real street in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn- after the 1986 Howard Beach incident and Tawana Brawley rape case- Do the Right Thing unapologetically highlighted the race-related tensions of multi-ethnic urban communities.
Just like 80’s fashion, the senseless killing of Brown and Black folks and gentrification are still here.
Spike in an April 7, 2006 New York magazine interview
“Who told you to buy a brownstone on my block, in my neighborhood, on my side of street?”

YES! YES! Thanks for this post!!! I loooooooooooove this movie!! It is so relevent 20 years later. Every time I watch it, I gain a new appreciation. The first clip is one of my favs. “GO BACK TO MASSACHUSETTS!” Spike is a genius. Does anyone else feel like he’s not really acting at all? Like he always pretty much plays himself in all his movies?
Right?! I love the gentrification scene too; I love how it combines comedy and truth.
Unless you count Tyler Perry productions and College Hill, we no longer see all black casts in film and television. I mean come on- Giancarlo Esposito, Ossie AND Ruby Dee, Rosie Perez, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Robin Harris, Martin Lawrence AND Spike himself!
I won’t say that films that tell our stories aren’t being made because they are. Unfortunately, many don’t know about them because we’ve settled for the mainstream.
I concur Ms. Noel
Movies like this hardly exist in mainstream
That is why I rather watch documentaries
My solution is to surround myself with the goodness of life
And nevermind the watered down ish
You see I realize the revolution well not be televised
So let them go on because the truth will prevail as you and I see beyond
