*Quickie* Toni Morrison Chooses Obama

During October of 1998, in piece published in The New Yorker, author Toni Morrison controversially dubbed former president Bill Clinton “the first Black President.” She reasoned that “Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald’s-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas.”

Now, 10 years later, Morrison is endorsing Barack Obama, who may more accurately earn the position of this country’s first recognized Black president.

Thoughts? Is Morrison back pedaling or simply supporting Obama because she agrees with his politics?

  1. I think it’s both. I def think she’s back pedaling. Clinton was NOT our first black president. Period. And shame on her for that statement. Those things she mentioned is not what makes someone black. That is simplyfing who we are. I’m sure she also supports Barack’s politics. But then which Black president would he be? First or second?
