On September 9, 2008, Brooklyn New York held it’s primary election. Kevin Powell ran to unseat encumbent Ed Towns who has held the seat for 26 years in New York’s 10th congressional district. This district includes Fort Greene, Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Mill Basin, Cypress Hills, East New York and Canarsie. Kevin Powell lost the race but managed to garner 11,046 votes. On the day of the primary, the ladies of Square Rootz showed their support of Powell by campaigning outside a polling place at New York Avenue and Herkimer.
