Making Sure We’re Taken Care of From Head to Toe

Six years ago, Tywana Smith was simply looking for a place in suburban Cincinnati to purchase products to use on her children’s hair. Unable to find what she was looking for she naturally turned to the web - first as a customer, then as a merchant. “We realized that there had to be other people who were in areas like this and couldn’t get their products,” Smith said.

Of course there were, so she and her husband, Brian, started doing research on the types and brands of products that people in similar situations might use and came up with a lot of the products they have for purchase on their Web site, TreasuredLocks.com.

For the past few years, more and more people have started to wear their hair in natural styles. From locs to kinky twists to the classic afro, people of color all over the country have started to move away from the chemical treatments that often do more harm than good. A lot of the products that people of color are used to using have a lot of chemicals that are not intended for their use, she said. “There’s not enough moisture and [the products] are very drying,” explains Smith.

That is because a lot of these products contain a lot of alcohol and act as an astringent for the scalp, drawing moisture out when it should be retaining it. Now that so many people are becoming more conscious of their cosmetic products, Smith’s site serves as a marketplace for all natural hair and skin products. “I think a lot more people are looking for more quality products,” Smith shares.

Tywana and Brian’s commitment to offering quality products to people of the diaspora is so strong that in addition to selling items made by Black Earth, SheaMoisture and Baka, they have a series of products that they offer under the names, Treasured Locks, Ajuven and HumiNature. The products include a hair growth serum, a hair and scalp elixr, herbal hair balm, conditioners, pomade, gel, body butters and oils.

In addition to products, TreasureLocks.com has leaped into the blogosphere and also offers a wealth of information on hair and skin care including tips on starting and maintaining hairstyles and a natural hair salon listing. “It’s really an honor for us to be able to offer this service,” Smith said. “The part I love about it is being able to talk to the different people on the blog and the message boards. It’s fulfilling to be able to help people.”
